asphericon awards prize to the best Bachelor's thesis in the SciTec department at the University of Applied Sciences in Jena.
Excellent student achievements in the Department of Science/Technology (SciTec) at the University of Applied Sciences in Jena were duly honored at a gala event. The best 2009 Bachelor's and Master's theses were awarded a prize.
The best Bachelor's thesis, entitled "Designing a microgripper", was submitted by Mr. Martin Buchmann. He developed a patented solution for a superfine gripping instrument, thereby demonstrating an excellent combination of theory and technology. The second award was presented to Anika Brahm, graduate of the Master's Course "Laser- and Optotechnology". She worked on her Master's thesis in the new research field of terahertz radiation at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) and developed a measuring system for the tomography of ultra-short terahertz pulses.
The managing director of asphericon GmbH, Mr. Sven R. Kiontke, and the managing director of Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Holzland, Mr. Erhard Bückemeier, presented the successful graduates with 250 euros each in prize money.
The highlight of the event was the testimonial lecture by Sven R. Kiontke, entitled "asphericon meets science", in which the intensive cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences in Jena and Jena-based companies was highlighted as an important starting point for generating high-quality innovative products and for ensuring the next generation of excellent young scientists.
